Words Against The Sky

Blur on the highway
We were a blur on the highway,
Singing out of tune
with the wind in our hair.
Amish buggies lined the brim
And I smiled at them as we passed.
Guitars in back seat,
Spontaneity in the front seat,
Imagining the car in a cartoonish way
Smiling at the other cars
With it’s gutsy, go-get-em beauties inside.
My cousin and I were gonna see the world.
Driving through Indiana on the way to Grandma’s house,
I said a thank you prayer.
I felt that God had laughed with joy
At the blur on the highway
We felt as if we could make the world smile.

Waiting to mend
If these lonely days drag you down
And you swim in an ocean of regret,
Remember there’s an end to pain
And all your tears could be well spent.
It may not come with the next dawn,
Or evenings of a later year,
But, soon when love is not forgotten,
It will wipe away each tear.
So, go ahead and yearn for change,
Believing someday worlds will end,
For when love is hidden deep within,
A lifetime of brokenness can mend

Rain
There was no rain so sweet as the rain that fell on our tiny young faces. Nothing seemed to soak my skin so completely. Bliss... Innocence danced between us then. Happiness came from within.

My Father
I remember when I was small, picking the sock fussies out from in-between your toes with glee.
I remember the silly rhyming songs you made up and the way you teased so mercilessly.
I remember harmonicas, drawings and crumbs in the butter.
I remember my Father, a kind, gentle, warm-hearted man with a mischief and sunshine smile.
